A perception of the world is mainly shaped by several factors that influence human way of thinking. Stereotype is a common stable opinion about any object, event or action. This essay is focused on the investigation of media influence over stereotyping.

The scientists point out two ways of media impact over stereotyping: semantic manipulation which is based on special arrangement of concepts which recall either positive or negative associations. This method is effective in influencing over the perception of the information. The second method is close to the first one as it refers to a purposeful ideological influence on the society via media resources.

Recent studies have outlined that the role of modern mass media has significantly modified. If in earlier years its main task was to cover true facts and events, now it presents the information which attracts and shocks viewers and readers. Moreover, a distortion of the information lead to the emergence of such stereotypes as all blondes are stupid, all criminals are Afro-Americans, all policemen are divided into “good ones” and “bad ones”, etc. In addition, the popularity of crime stories lead to bad consequences. On the one hand, it created a sense of fear and the bigger demand on guns. On the other hand, it distorted an understanding of crime and made it as trivial as shopping. As a result, the whole world knows the names of James Holmes and Adam Lanza and their bloody stories when tens of innocent people became victims.

It is obvious that nowadays business based on news coverage is organized in a way to bring a good benefit. However, media make a big mistake by giving the public what it wants. Wrong, distorted information modifies human attitude to the environment and provokes the emergence of stereotyping. Living in a world and thinking with the only stereotypes would lead to serious problems within the society and total destruction of life.
