Our universe is full of things, that are beyond our understanding; thorough researching of which, could reveal the secret of how everything was created and help us understand our determination.
A great discovery was made less than 200 years ago.Who would have thought, that these small, celestial bodies – parts of our solar system, defined as asteroids, would become an object of discussion among specialists in different fields of activities. Researching their background and their behavior is of a great importance for the humanity. As we all know, dinosaurs existed long ago before people and the reason of their disappearance was an asteroid.
The first asteroid was discovered on the first of January in 1801 by an Italian priest and astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi, while he was busy making a star map. At first he thought it was a comet, but once he determined its orbit, it became clear to him, that it looked more like a small planet. Later it occurred to him, that it was an asteroid. He named it Ceres, after the Sicilian goddess of grain. It is also the largest asteroid in our inner solar system (Asteroids, n.d.).
An asteroid – a space body with a rough, solid terrain, that moves throughout space circling the sun. Because of the sizes they have, which happen to be rather small in compared to other space bodies like planets; they cannot be distinguished as one of such kind, but still, they get to be called as minor planets. They appeared 4.6 billion years ago in a result of our solar system’s creation. Most of them are situated in a huge belt between orbits of Mars and Jupiter (Space / Astronomy, n.d.).
The sizes of asteroids vary from one another. While some of them reach the size of Ceres, which is 940 kilometers across, others like 1991 BA, are only about 20 feet across. Most of them have an irregular shape, although a few of them are almost orbicular. Usually, they can be found covered in craters, scattered around their whole surface. They spin around the sun in elliptical orbits. Over 150 asteroids are known to have a small companion moon and some of them even have three of them. Double and triple asteroids exist as well. The distance between them is insignificant, which makes it possible for them to orbit each other (Charles, n.d.).
A few asteroids and comets are listed below for comparison (Table 1). The Distance is presented as a mean distance to the Sun in thousands of kilometers; masses are presented in kilograms (Asteroids, n.d.).
Analyzing the information about asteroids, it has become obvious, that these celestial bodies contain a lot of useful information, concerning the birth of our solar system. Examining their behavior, allows us to understand the nature and ways of its creation.
